In 2019, op 22-jarige leeftijd, werd Alexandre Kantorow de eerste Franse pianist die het prestigieuze Tsjaikovski Concours won. Maar zelfs daarvoor had hij al drie veelgeprezen SACD's uitgebracht, prijzen ontvangen zoals Diapason d'or l'Année en Gramophone's Editor's Choice, en recensies ontvangen variërend van "Liszt reïncarnated" tot "a fire-breathing virtuoso with poetic charm and innate stylistic mastery".

Dit recital, zijn eerste uitgave sinds het Tsjaikovsky Concours, biedt volop ruimte voor virtuositeit, poëzie en charme, altijd gefilterd door een alert bewustzijn van stijl. Het programma bestaat uit drie rapsodieën, een genre waarvan het improvisatorische karakter perfect aansluit bij de geest van de Romantiek, maar hier geïnterpreteerd door drie zeer verschillende artistieke temperamenten: Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms en Béla Bartók. Kantorow begint met een voorbeeld van de rijpe Brahms, zijn eerste Rapsodie uit 1879, en neemt ons mee terug naar het begin van de carrière van de componist met de jeugdig hartstochtelijke Piano Sonate Nr. 2. Brahms was 21 toen hij de sonate schreef - slechts twee jaar jonger dan Bartók in het jaar 1904, toen laatstgenoemde zijn Rapsodie componeerde.

In die tijd begon Bartók net de volksmuziek te ontdekken die zo'n belangrijke inspiratiebron zou worden. Als Hongaars pianist was hij echter zeer vertrouwd met de muziek van Liszt en zal hij de Hongaarse Rapsodie nr. 11 van de componist hebben gekend, met het afsluitende prestissimo, waarmee de SACD onstuimig wordt afgesloten.
